Mesmer - Terrain Vague II

	arbitrary25 (CD)

24 April 2026arbitrary presents Terrain Vague II - the second album by Danish electro-acoustic trio MESMER. With this work, the trio creates a sensuous and reflective space to inhabit in a time marked by speed, noise, and digital fragmentation.Terrain Vague II emerges from field recordings made in Læsø, Frederikshavn, and Aalborg in Denmark. Using environmental sounds from harbors, coastlines, and the outskirts of the city, MESMER explores the places where nature and culture intersect. These field recordings are not atmospheric background, but rather the architectural foundation of the work — carriers of social, historical, and sensory traces. Through improvisation, compositional structures, and an electro-acoustic setup featuring synthesizers, trumpet, percussion, and modular systems, these traces are transformed into personal and collective sonic journeys. The title refers to the concept of terrain vague: indeterminate transitional zones with open potential. For MESMER, it becomes an image of a society in motion. Rather than offering definitive answers, the trio creates an open listening space in which the boundaries between the composed and the improvised, the controlled and the free, dissolve. Listening is activated here as a conscious act — an opportunity to reconnect with place, presence, and community.

Terrain Vague II by Mesmer (arbitrary25)

	- - -
In relation to their debut work Terrain Vague (arbitrary19, 2023), MESMER has developed their practice in a more consistently site-specific and spatial direction. While the first work established the trio’s shared language between field recording and electro-acoustic composition, Terrain Vague II allows the specific geographies to structure the music. Improvisation comes clearly to the fore, contrasts are sharpened, and the tension between the individual and the collective is pronounced. With this work, the format is also expanded — realized as an album, a concert-series, and an installation.MESMER — Emil Jensen, Victor Dybbroe, and Anders Filipsen — have worked closely together for more than 15 years across music, film, radio, and installation. Their long-standing collaboration, recognized with two Danish Music Awards (DMA) and works created for renowned museums, lends the music a rare intuitive precision. With Terrain Vague II, MESMER refines and deepens their artistic position. They offer a space for slowness and attentiveness within a complex present — and insist on sound’s capacity to open new ways of being in the world.

arbitrary.bandcamp.cominfo [a] arbitraryproject . com- - -“Jan Jelinek and Copehagen-based composer Mads Emil Nielsen trade remixes on this one, with Jelinek stretching 'Framework 10' into a ghosted early electronic hallucination, and Nielsen matching Jelinek's 'Zwischen' collage with modular blips and drones.
Originally released in 2019 on the CRXSSINGS fundraiser compilation, these two tracks were too good to let languish in digital-only obscurity. Now pressed to 7" and packaged with Nielsen's graphic score, it's a great reminder how impressive this pair of reworks actually were. Jelinek's version of 'Framework 10' bumps Nielsen's two minute original up to seven minutes, fatting its austere modular belches with kinked sine moans, saturated brassy punctuations and sub-aquatic exotica FX. And Nielsen's take on Jelinek's brief Marcel Duchamp collage - if you remember, Jelinek stitched the silences between speech in interviews into short negative space extractions - adds drama to the original, supplementing the pregnant pauses with white noise bursts and modular squiggles.”

Mads Emil Nielsen + Chromacolor: Heartbeats

arbitrary presents the second in a series of 10” vinyl remix collaboration releases by Danish musician Mads Emil Nielsen and Chromacolor.Side A features Heartbeats, a composition Nielsen originally made for a radio soundtrack. The track is derived from loops and granulations of sine waves and pulses from Nielsen’s modular synth, which he later combined with recordings of synthesized bass and layers of organ-like tones. On side B is a remix by German sound artist and producer Hanno Leichtmann under his Chromacolor moniker. As on the first split 10” (Constellation, 2022), Leichtmann worked with sounds from the original mix, combining it with his Hohner Guitaret, Fender Rhodes and Moog bass. Additional cello tones by Anthea Caddy and vocal contributions from Annie Garlid round out the remix.available via:ANOST (DE) ︎︎︎

	Denseland – Code & Melody

arbitrary2026 April 2024David Moss, Hanno Leichtmann, Hannes Strobl

“Just because Denseland take inspiration from the past, doesn’t mean they're stuck in it. On their first album since 2017, their second for arbitrary, the Berlin-based trio instead ventures slowly but steadily into unknown territory. Hanno Leichtmann and Hannes Strobl’s dub- infused, bass-heavy rhythmic minimalism in combination with lyricist David Moss’s sonorous yet deadpan delivery opens up a space that feels both claustrophobic and infinitely wide.
Like previous Denseland albums, »Code & Melody« picks up on the sparse side of dub-enamoured post-punk, no wave, post-rock, adventurous electronic and improvised acoustic music and blends this with a vocal performance marked by a Lou Reedian cool, a confrontationalism à la Lydia Lunch and, occasionally, an experimentalism akin to Scott Walker.”Read more

Mads Emil Nielsen + Chromacolor: Constellation

arbitrary presents the first in a series of remix collaborations and releases by Mads Emil Nielsen and Chromacolor, a project from the German sound artist and producer Hanno Leichtmann.

Mads Emil Nielsen’s Constellation (side A) was created by combining several granulations and textures based on a single short recording, extracted from improvisations made with the Buchla synthesizer at EMS, Stockholm – combined with randomly looping orchestral samples, edited and produced in his studio in Copenhagen. After having heard Nielsen’s live performance in Berlin in 2017, Hanno Leichtmann suggested remixing various of his tracks including Constellation (Remix – side B).

Mads Emil Nielsen: Black Box 3

arbitrary presents the third in the Black Box series of releases by Mads Emil Nielsen. The release, which showcases a more sample- and grid-based side of the Danish musician/composer’s work, is part of a sequence of publications with music and audio originally made for theatre, radio soundtracks and more.

Black Box 3 is based on sound pieces produced for Sprækker (Cracks), a dance performance & installation in Denmark, 2021. The starting points for these pieces are improvisations recorded with contemporary dancers, in which Nielsen guides the listener through a corpus of synthesizer recordings, everyday sounds and radio archives.

Neural - review, October 2023

"Installation – 2" included on The Wire Tapper 61 - The Wire 470 / April issue - 2023

“Originally composed for a dance performance and installation, 'Black Box 3' is an uncompromisingly reduced set of processed field recordings, drum skitters, and cautious synthetic minimalism. (...) Based on improvisations recorded with contemporary dancers, Nielsen wanted to guide the listener through a selection of sounds, from synthesizer experiments to everyday sounds and radio archives.
So we're presented with clever, precise tweaking on 'Installation - 2', that obscures chopped-up drums behind synthesized glitches and moonlit field recordings. It sounds like someone jamming in a remote marsh at night, and that's never a bad thing. 'Climbing Plants' is more immersive somehow, molding hissing environmental sounds into billowing dark ambience that sounds almost like dub techno at a quarter speed. Nielsen's command of microscopic percussive elements is impressive, and his ability to weave fine pinprick patterns with undergrowth crunches and insect calls is particularly hypnotic on closing track 'Vibrations'.”

Mads Emil Nielsen: PM016 (2020 Remaster)

arbitrary presents the 2020 remaster & vinyl reissue of PM016 by Danish musician Mads Emil Nielsen, re-mastered and cut by Kassian Troyer, with cover artwork by visual artist Dane Patterson.Originally released as limited edition C30 tape on Plant Migration Records in 2014, the four pieces on Nielsen’s first solo release are based on short orchestral and percussive samples manipulated by various synthesizer modules and effects processors. Variations are created by emphasizing different frequencies, harmonics, sections of short loops and the various surprises that result from the idiosyncrasies of each machine.

	Mesmer - Terrain Vague

arbitrary presents Terrain Vague – the debut album of Danish group MESMER.
The album is a series of (deconstructed) live-recordings taken from three live concerts. The sounds on this record are taken from two years’ worth of sound research and creative outbursts with inspiration from field trips to the outskirts of Copenhagen. Intrigued by the auditive landscapes of places where nature and culture meet and challenge each other.

Listening to the field-recordings led MESMER to interpret the moods, musical qualities, and inherent energy of the sounds from these areas. Thus, creating melodies, harmonies and rhythmical structures that, together with the field recordings, paved the way for this album.

	Chromacolor

“»Chromacolor« is one of those records that immediately feels like home even though it is hard to locate stylistically. Written and recorded by Hanno Leichtmann in Berlin and Madeira between 2020 and 2022, it draws on rhythmic minimalism as a guiding principle and might call to mind organic, instrument-based ambient music, but also incorporates jazzy moments as well as Annie Garlids multi-layered vocals that permeate through these nine pieces.

The foundation for Leichtmann’s Chromacolor project was laid when the prolific Berlin-based producer, musician, and drummer borrowed a vibraphone and a Fender Rhodes from two friends. Combining their unique sonic affordances with those of a Guitaret, an electric lamellophone, he further expanded his sound palette by inviting other musicians — Anthea Caddy, Sabine Vogel, Tobias Delius, Els Vandeweyer, Sabine Ercklentz, Andrede, Mike Majkowski, Andrei Ladeishchikov, Oona Farchy, Gonçalo Caboz as well as Rafael and Hugo Andrade — to play small but vital parts in the production of the album.”

Released 19 May 2023
